--Melissa P., Jamaica Plain, MA --S. S., Waltham, MA I came to Dr. Xu for relief of various menopausal miseries, including hot flashes, night sweats and disturbed sleep, heart palpitations, muscle pain, and mood swings. My primary care doctor did not acknowledge these symptoms as aspects of menopause, and it was not until I read that they were so recognized in traditional Chinese medicine that my worries about them subsided. (My primary care doctor’s) primary suggestion for dealing with my discomfort and pain had been an anti-depressant and other medications. Having read of acupuncture’s effectiveness, and determined to avoid serious medication if more holistic solutions could be found, I started seeing Dr. Xu once a week. His acupuncture treatments lessened the severity of my hot flashes right away, and soon moderated my other symptoms as well. With addition of the traditional Chinese herbs he suggested, my hot flashes disappeared almost completely. Dr. Xu continues to help me manage stress as well as the menopausal symptoms it exacerbates. I recommend him to any woman who seeks balance in her changing body. --Irene Maksymjuk I have been a patient of Dr. Xu for one year. He has treated me with acupuncture and herbs. He has helped me a great deal. For the past five years I have suffered severe digestive problems. At my worst, I lost fifteen pounds and could not eat or drink anything without feeling sick. I had reflex, gastric irritation, and delayed gastric emptying. My symptoms included nausea, burning, sour stomach, and loss of appetite. I was treated by gastroenterologists and took several prescription medications. My symptoms did not improve; in fact, I felt worse and experienced terrible side effects from the medications. I was told there were no other medications for me to try and there was nothing else that could help me feel better. That is when I began my acupuncture treatments. At first, I had treatments twice a week. I did not notice any improvement for many weeks. After about twelve treatments, I noticed that the pain in the center of my stomach was no longer there. I had had the pain for two years. I continued my treatments and began to feel somewhat better. I had days that I could eat easy-to-digest foods without feeling sick. Over time, I reduced my treatments to once a week. I had more and more days that I felt well. I could eat more and more foods without symptoms. At this time, I am enjoying eating foods that I have been unable to digest for years--such as tomatoes and pineapple. I still take herbs and have occasional acupuncture treatments. When I think of how I feel now and how I felt a year ago, I am amazed and thankful that I found Dr. Xu and that acupuncture and herbs have helped me so much. --Amy Furman Tests at Boston University Medical Center in October 2002, including a PSA reading of 6.7 and a biopsy, confirmed I had Prostate Cancer. Treatment options to me in Boston Medical Center were: 1) surgery to remove my prostate gland entirely, 2) eight weeks of daily radiation to kill the cancer cells, 3) an alternative approach using Chinese herbal medicine. Prostate surgery often results in incontinence and impotence and radiation commonly results in a compromised immune system. So, after a lot of thought, I chose the alternative approach which Guangli Xu, BU’s Licensed Herbalist and Acupuncturist, prescribed special herbs to my cancer. Within one month of his treatment with herbal medicine, my PSA reading dropped below 5.0. After that, the PSA barometer for the presence of cancer cells dropped steadily for the next six months, reaching it’s current level of 1.2 (well below the safe level of 5.0). In April 2003 another biopsy confirmed the destruction of more than 2/3’s of the cancer cells which had been discovered in my prostate seven months earlier. Starting in May 2003, Guangli Xu recommended continuing the daily dose of Powdered Mushrooms but discontinued the Herbal Teas, which were no longer necessary. Today, a year later, my monthly PSA tests remain at the 1.2 levels and I am, for all practical purposes, cancer-free. Needless to say, I am extra-ordinarily grateful to Guangli Xu for healing my prostate cancer with absolutely no bad side affects whatsoever. --Richard W. Shaver After three years of conventional drug-therapy for trigeminal neuralgia, I came to Dr. Guangli Xu's Acupuncture Clinic with persistent facial nerve pain that was triggered by talking, chewing, and even swallowing. Three of Dr. Xu's treatments produced substantial relief, and within two months they reduced the pain to only an occasional twinge--remarkably, without side-effects. Acupuncture has allowed me to avoid invasive neurosurgery and, more importantly, it has restored my hope for leading a normal life. My admiration for Dr. Xu's skill and patience is sincere, and my gratitude to him is immense. --Michaela Casey I would like to thank you for the treatment I received when I had a painful shingle on my back. Since then I feel good. You showed me the miracle of Chinese needles. I will recommend you to everybody who needs your help. --Mr. Vladimir Staroselsky, Dr. of Sciences in Applied Mathematics, Professor of MIT In 1992 I injured my back and 2 disks moved out. With press sciatica I was suffering from low back pain and couldn't walk because my right leg was hurt. I did see different doctors (chiropractor, physician, and therapist). No one could help me. In 1993 I met Dr. Guangli Xu, and after 3 months of acupuncture my pain was gone. For several years I didn't have any pain, but I wasn't very careful and my pain came back to me. Dr. Guangli Xu helped me again with acupuncture, herbs and electrical stimulation. Acupuncture has allowed me to avoid surgery. I very much appreciate Dr. Guangli Xu's skill and patience. --A. Rubinshteyn In July of 2003, I got the shingles. The doctor gave me pain medication which I took for several weeks. It was little help. My appetite disappeared and I could not sleep. I went back to the doctor and he changed the medication. This medication made me sick to my stomach and I stopped taking it. In late August a friend suggested acupuncture. Anything was better than taking any more pills with no results. At that point I would try anything. She made the call and was able to get an appointment later that afternoon and drove me to meet with Guangli Xu. He explained the procedure thoroughly and answered all my questions. He took me to a quiet room and my friend came with me. He put needles on my ear lob, left hand and leg. I had felt nothing when he did this. He dimmed the lights in the room and soft music played. He advised me to relax and try not to move too much. With that he left the room and said he would be back in about 20 minutes to check on my progress. He returned 20 minutes later to check on me and asked how I was doing. I told him the pain had subsided slightly. He then checked the needles did something to them and said he would be back. The procedure took approximately one half to three quarters of an hour. When the procedure ended, the pain had subsided greatly. I met with Mr. Xu and made arrangements for my next session. When I returned home that evening my older son commented that I did not look like the same person he saw that morning. My younger son phoned and could not believe it was me on the phone. I sounded so much better. He wanted to know what I had done. It took approximately six visits (mid September) before my pain completely subsided. It was well worth it. I would recommend acupuncture to anyone in pain. Mr. Xu is very knowledgeable. He is honest, compassionate, and an all around nice person. --Lucille I have had ear problems and many operations, over the years, since I was five. I had been having problems with my equilibrium and I was having trouble walking. My mother suggested I try acupuncture. I had been struggling with this for months. Medication did not help, so I thought, why not. I called Mr. Xu and made an appointment. He suggested a consultation first so he could get some history to be sure acupuncture would help. There would be no charge for the consultation. He told me he could do nothing for the constant draining of my ear because it had to be corrected medically, but could help me with my balance. I started treatment in November. After the first treatment my mother noticed a decisive change in the way I was walking. I was steadier on my feet. While I was having the treatment for my balance I started having problems with my stomach. I went to my physician, explained my problem and he sent me for a number of tests. I had acid reflex (gerds). I told Mr. Xu about it and he said he could help me. So now he was not only helping me with my balance but also my stomach. Acupuncture was a great help. Mr. Xu was a life saver for me.
